Biography

Dr. Ryan graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He continued his education at East Tennessee State University, graduating in 2014 with a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology. While at ETSU, Dr. Ryan’s primary research focus was enhancing a brain wave (EEG) based communication system for those with severe speech and physical disabilities, a brain-computer interface. In July 2016, Dr. Ryan joined the Hearing and Balance Research Program as a postdoctoral fellow to examine EEG in listening effort. This research focused on understanding how listening environment, hearing aid use, and cognitive load affects the listener’s perception of speech. Dr. Ryan’s interests include cognitive aspects of hearing loss, hearing loss management, and auditory/visual attention.
